Type 2 Diabetes – Heart Function in the Fetus When the Mother Has Gestational Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes – Heart Function in the Fetus When the Mother Has Gestational Diabetes

Gestational or pregnancy-induced diabetes is a health problem for both mothers and their children. In March of 2017, the medical journal Pediatric Cardiology reported on a study on fetal heart function in Gestational diabetic mothers. Earlier studies have shown heart abnormalities during the third trimester or last three months of the pregnancy. Researchers at Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan, found abnormalities during the second trimester, or middle three months.

The human heart is composed of four chambers, the left and right atria at the top of the heart, and the left and right ventricle at the bottom of the heart. In adult circulation, blue non-oxygenated blood flows from the right atrium to the right ventricle, from where it travels to the lungs. Picking up oxygen in the lungs, red blood cells turn red and make their way from the lungs to the right atrium. From there blood travels through the mitral valve and into the left ventricle. The left ventricle then pumps the blood on to the rest of the body.

In the fetus things are different. Blood picks up oxygen from the mother’s placenta and carries it to the right atrium. From the right atrium, the red blood goes directly to the left atrium and on to the left ventricle, bypassing the lungs entirely.

The investigators compared fetal hearts in mothers with Gestational diabetes at 19 to 24 weeks with fetal hearts in non-diabetic mothers…

  • hearts in the diabetic group showed differences in the amount of time they stayed empty before filling and the amount of time they took to contract.
  • another abnormality related to the valve between the left atrium and left ventricle could indicate an abnormal function of the left ventricle.

It is important for enough oxygenated blood to go to the brain of the fetus and all the other organs for growth and development. Checking on fetal hearts during early Gestational diabetes could one day become a clinical test to learn whether future interventions might be helpful.

For now, heart conditions linked with Gestational diabetes are one more reason to prevent or control pregnant mothers developing this form of diabetes. Ways of preventing Gestational diabetes include…

  • achieving and maintaining normal weight before conception,
  • eating healthful foods such as fruits and vegetables,
  • gaining only the recommended amount of weight, and
  • getting regular exercise

Mothers should be concerned about the possibility of developing diabetes during their pregnancy. The following put women at high risk…

  • being overweight or obese,
  • having a history of high blood sugar before the pregnancy,
  • having a family history of Type 2 diabetes,
  • leading a sedentary lifestyle, and
  • being a member of the Black or Asian race.
Engineering Continuing Education – What Is the Future of Engineering?

Engineering Continuing Education – What Is the Future of Engineering?

With the current down turn in the economy many engineers have loss their jobs or worried that they maybe losing their job soon. Budget constraints both in the public and private sector are forcing to think about how secure the jobs really are. But as we all know this recession will not last forever. Sooner or later the promised recovery will begin. The question is what engineering will benefit from the renewed economy and which ones will not fair so well? There is no real crystal ball, but there are clear indicators that every engineer should be aware of and make preparations accordingly.

Engineers will need to continue their education to stay up with the latest technologies to offer their clients the best solutions. Most of the State Licensing Boards require Professional Engineers to renew their professional licenses periodically with a minimum number of continuing education units. These units are usually Professional Development Hours (PDH) or Continuing Education Units (CEU). One PDH is equivalent to one hour of course education, and one CEU is equivalent to ten PDH or ten hours of course education. Some may find that their profession is not growing or trailing behind may need to change careers or strength their technical knowledge.

One of the best indicators of upcoming markets is to know what the baby boomer generation needs and wants. The baby boomers, the individuals born between 1945 and 1964, are now approaching retirement age. Many will be retiring and will require some medical and health assistance. They will also want medication to appear young as long as possible. Obviously fields that support this industry will do very well. The most likely profession to benefit is Biomedical Engineers. They are necessary to improve new medical devices and equipment. In addition, new facilities will be required for the aging population. Independent Living Facilities and senior communities will rise in demand. This will definitely improve prospects for Civil and Mechanical Engineers.

Another field that will continue to have a high demand for engineers is the environmental fields, which includes new green products, renewable energy, water resources, and waste-water management. The United States will continue to encourage renewable energy including wind and solar power with government grants and other types of funding. These projects will generate numerous jobs for many different professions. As the population continues to expand a greater demand will be placed on housing and our water resources and waste-water management. These increased demands will increase jobs for Electrical, Mechanical, Civil and Environmental Engineers.

Due to the increasing population and aging facilities, the government will also need to expand and improve the country’s infrastructure. Roads, bridges, dams, railways, airports, and utilities throughout the country will need greater attention. These improvements will also increase the demand for Civil Engineers.

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Occupational Outlook Handbook”, 2010-11 Edition, over the next decade, 2008 to 2018, the engineering field should grow by 11%. In 2008 engineers held 1.6 million jobs in the United …

The Joy of Living

The Joy of Living

Life is beautiful on its own. I realize this after I translated the short story Good Luck and Best Wishes from Chinese into English.

In the story, people live a primitive life with few modern belongings in a far-off mountainous area; however, they enjoy life enormously. A bowl of fermented spirits, a flowery bun, colorful strings, spices, scented pouches, and longing for love and marriage bring them great joy of living.

Mom teaches her teen daughter how to hold a needle and how to use a thimble to sew flowered cloth into the shape of a heart to make a scented pouch, and how to spread aromatic spices to make the scented pouch bulge. The girl savors the pleasure of using a thimble to push a needle, the pleasure of pulling a needle through a cloth, and the pleasure of joining two pieces of cloth together.

Dad teaches his young boy to pound the spices in a mortar with a stone pestle, but spices jump out mischievously. Through pounding and pounding, the boy finally can make the spices turn compliant and burst into flowers, which satisfies him. As he pounds the pestle up and down, the house becomes filled with the aroma.

The atmosphere is aromatic and mystic and the practice means more than itself. The teenagers feel that it is something beautiful and worth expecting. The implication of sex education is evasive, beautiful and healthy.

On Dragon Boat Festival (the 5th day of the 5th lunar month), the young boys and young girls climb onto mountaintop to collect Chinese spicy mugwort plants, they feel like harvesting good luck and best wishes for the entire year. They enjoy being young, being together, being pure and being in love.

The story doesn’t provide a specific time setting nor a particular place. There is nothing to do with politics. It is simply an ode to life. Living is meaningful and beautiful by itself. It doesn’t take much to be happy.

Good Luck and Best Wishes, authored by Wenbin Guo, is included in the short story collection Street Wizards and Other New Folklore, one volume of 21st Century Chinese Literature, which presents a kaleidoscope of Chinese folk customs and provides a view of the multifaceted and living China.

Wenbin Guo, born in 1966 in Xiji County, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, now is a chair of the Federation of Literary and Art Circles of Yinchuan City and vice Chair of Ningxia Writer’s Association. Good Luck and Best Wishes has won the People’s Literature Prize and other awards in China.…

Why Do Women Develop the Urge of Getting Married?

Why Do Women Develop the Urge of Getting Married?

Women around the world develop fondness towards getting married at a particular age. There are many reasons for a woman to get married and all of them are completely justified. If you are traveling the same boat, here are few reasons you can easily identify with for allowing the opposite gender in your life forever.

While men start planning for their job and career from an early age, women, apart from planning a successful professional life, also prioritize getting married to their dream men. It won’t be appropriate to say that men don’t want to get married, but women have more reasons to tie a wedding knot. The discussion below will definitely carry one or more reasons you can identify with for planning a married life.

Fairy Tales of Childhood

All those stories and fairy tales, where romance blossoms between a prince and a princess, paints the picture of marriage in a woman’s mind right from the childhood days. The immature dreams get nourished with growth in age, which ultimately encourage her towards marriage at very first step of adultness.

Age is the Natural Factor

How old do you have to be to get married? While there is no specific age to be answered for this question, as soon as a woman descend her teenage, a natural force develops curiosity for getting married. Your ambition to get settled in professional life might delay your age of marriage, still you don’t completely abandon the thought of enjoying the status of a married woman.

Thirst for Unconditioned Love

Tired of dating, which might fail to satisfy her love bone, a woman develops interest in marriage for winning unconditioned love from her man. Also, you might discover a man, who is madly in love with you. A constant appetite of loving and getting loved can answer the question of why get married.

Feeling of Security with Men

No matter how successful a woman might get in her life, the real sense of security is experienced by her after getting married to a man, who is physically as well as mentally strong. Women want to get married to feel secure in their men’s arms and it definitely doesn’t exhibit their inferiority. It is a natural phenomenon, which is experienced by every woman.

There is no need to hesitate while admitting that sexual satisfaction also motivates a woman to get married. Fulfillment of these desires is not among the things to do before you get married, at least not for majority of women. Sexual relationship in a legalized form is what most of the women desire for.

Love for Children

Playing the role of a mother is among most cherishing desires of every woman. Right from the age of playing with dolls, women develop motherhood in more or less quantity and this inspires them to have their own children. So, it is a justified reason for women to show desperation towards marriage.

Bull Market Flashback to 1982

Bull Market Flashback to 1982

On August 19, 1986, I landed at the JFK airport, and my dad's old college classmate, James, picked me up. After a few days of staying with him and his family, he dropped me off at college in Montclair, New Jersey.

Coming to the United States was a new beginning for me. Going to college was like diving into a whole new world, where I had to figure out something new each and every day. It forced me to work out how things worked bit by bit.

And so many things that are so obvious today … were so hard to figure out on my own back then. For example, I did not know how to dress for cold weather, and, as a result, I was cold almost all the time in the winter.

What's going on in the stock market reminds me of that time, because today most people are completely baffled. Without you have experience and knowledge of how markets work, you're going to make all the wrong decisions.

And you could end up missing out on something that could absolutely change your life in 2017 …

This critical thing is a bull market in stocks.

And I'm not just talking about a major new bull market in stocks that is going to propel the Dow Jones Industrial Average to 50,000 … and then beyond.

I believe that when this bull market ends, the Dow could easily be 100,000.

I know that many of you think that this looks crazy. However, think back to 1982, which was the beginning of the last major bull market in stocks. People were pessimistic about the future of our country.

One easy way to measure the negative mood of that time period is to look at one of the most popular magazines back then: Time .

The September 6, 1982 issue of Time featured the new bull market that was just beginning.

Inside the issue were doubts that are similar to the ones that people have today about the stock market:

No one predicted it. No one can explain it. No one dreamed that it could keep going day after day after day. But last week Wall Street continued on one of the most unbelievable stock-trading binges in financial history … The frenzy has broken records, and then broken them again … Is this a suckers' rally or the beginning of a sustained bull market ? Why has the momentum been so strong when the prospects for economic recovery are so uncertain?

Now, when you go back to 1982, you'll find two incredible similarities to 2017.

First, there was an incredible technology – the personal computer was just beginning to emerge as an intense economic force in our economy.

Second, you had the coming of age of the baby-boomer generation, the oldest of what had just turned 34.

And today, we have the same two things going on.

First, we have this incredible technological development – the Internet of Things is beginning …

The Scientific Research Behind Hope – Antidote to Human Misery Or Pipe Dream?

The Scientific Research Behind Hope – Antidote to Human Misery Or Pipe Dream?

To what extent is hope necessary or relevant for these difficult times? The world is besieged by economic, military, educational, and healthcare problems which seem to be insurmountable. In such a world, of what possible use is hope? It feels as if Pandora opened her box only recently, allowing a wave of evils to descend upon humankind. And yet, in the Greek myth, Pandora closed the box while one thing remained inside – hope. Is hope a powerful psychological asset, an antidote to human shortcomings? Or is hope simply a pipe dream for Pollyanna-ish optimists who can not see the brutal, harsh nature of reality?

Hope Is Helpful In A Variety of Areas

Hope has been studied in psychology labs through the world for dozens of years. Research studies have shown that greater hope is associated with:

O Freedom from anxiety

O Less depression

O More positive mood

O Increased popularity among people

O Higher achievement in a number of areas (academic, athletic, military, political and professional)

O Greater quality of social relationships

O Improved physical health

O Increased accomplishment of goals

O Increased tolerance of pain

O Reduced cardiovascular risk

If hope is a pipe dream for those who do not see reality accurately, then the rose-colored pipe dream comes with a slew of physical, emotional, social and voluntary benefits. Given the broad range of positive advantages that hope confers upon its users, it might be more simply stated that hope helps. Hope is, in fact, a powerful psychological asset.

Hope Defined

Hope is a belief or wish that in the future good events and positive feelings will come more frequently than bad events and negative feelings. Rick Snyder, a researcher at Kansas University, sees hope as having three distinct parts:

1. Goals – Goals can be large or small, short- or long-term, formal or informal. Goals can be set in any area of life. However, without goals, there is no future-oriented thinking, and then no hope.

2. Pathways – A workable plan to get around potential challenges to enable one to get to the goal.

3. Agency – The energy, motivation, or will to act. Agency is the degree of determination one has to achieve a goal.

Hope Is More About The Future Than The Present

To the extent that one has these three elements, one has hope. Hope comes from the excitation one feet about the future possibility of accomplishing goals. Hope is not as much about the present moment as it is about realizing future potential. Hope is a perception wheree one sees the future as filled with possibilities. Hope helps to create the future as it motivates people to strive towards creating new constructive realities.

Hopeful People Do not Play The Blame Game

One of the appealing aspects of hope is that hopeful people do not get into blaming themselves or the world for falling short of a goal. Instead, when they fail, hope people ask 'What now?' They come up with alternative ways to …

What Do Horses Know About Leadership?

What Do Horses Know About Leadership?

A veteran educator in the field of leadership development, June Gunter, Ed.D., was not a very troubling trend. According to Gunter, the word "lead" has become the latest four-letter word. Being in the field of leadership development for the past 20 years she observed a growing pattern where the people with the character to lead were saying no to the job. When Gunter asked former leaders why they had chosen to leave leadership positions that they said it was because the job was consuming, thankless, and not worth the sacrifices they had to make in their personal and family lives. It was hard for her to keep motivating them to lead. Because of Gunter's own experience, she agreed with them. Compelled to find a new source of hope for herself and her clients, Gunter set out on a mission to find a new model of leadership that would re-inspire people to become the leaders their communities desire. Much to her surprise, she found this new model of leadership on the back of a horse.

In 2004, Gunter founded an organization named TeachingHorse that provides experiential learning and leadership development with horses. Working with horses, leaders learn how to remain calm and confident in the face of uncertainty, how to communicate with authenticity, and how to create strong partnerships. All the horse activities take place with people on the ground and no horse experience is necessary. The foundation of TeachingHorse is a model of leadership Gunter referes to as MareWisdom that was developed in the course of her lifelong relationship with horses and a study of their herd dynamics.

From ballrooms to boardrooms to barns all across the country, June Gunter is bringing fresh ideas about how to lead our businesses, our families, and our own lives in ways that create healthy sustainable communities. With a no-nonsense style and a dry sense of humor sprinkled with an authentic Southern accent, this classic cowgirl with a doctorate in education is taking some of the traditional thinking about leadership and turning it upside down.

The MareWisdom model answers the question, "What do horses know about leadership?" For a herd to place their trust in a lead mare, she must demonstrate four capabilities. The lead mare must be paying attention and able to detect even the most minor changes in the environment. The lead mare must give them clear direction on where to go next. The lead mare must be able to follow that direction with focused energy, providing the herd with guidance on the pace (ie, walk, trot, canter) with which to respond to those changes. The lead mare must also show the congruence of her inner and outer expression. You do not have to wonder what she is thinking, her body language tells you and she never lies. Ultimately, the herd must know the lead mare has their best interest as her sole source of motivation at all times.

Attention. Direction. Energy. Congruence. When a lead mare demonstrates these capabilities, the herd …

Can Light Really Affect My Wine?

Can Light Really Affect My Wine?

The short answer is that light can definitely affect wine, but we need to take a closer look at the physics and chemistry of it all to understand why and how in what is called light-strike reactions, which can impart off-odors to wine, what the French call goût de lumière.

Wine is sensitive to the damaging rays of light, particularly ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight and fluorescent lighting; that’s why wine (and beer) is packaged in dark bottles-the best example is Port in those familiar, dark, opaque bottles. Wines packaged in clear glass bottles are meant for quick consumption and should be stored in carton boxes until such a time.

All forms of radiation, including visible light ultraviolet (UV) rays and X-rays, have energy that is directly proportional to their frequencies or inversely proportional to their wavelengths-that is, high-frequency waves have short wavelengths, and vice versa. And the greater the energy, the greater the catalytic effect of chemical reactions in wine.

Of concern in wine are visible light and the sun’s UVA rays-yes, UVA rays because research has proven that even a short exposure of wine to sun (UVB and UVC are absorbed by the atmosphere), in the order of hours, can have detrimental effects. That’s because UVA rays lie in the 315-400 nanometer (nm) range of the electromagnetic spectrum and therefore has more energy than visible light, which lies in the 400-700 nm range.

Glass acts as a filter, but clear glass offers no protection against UVA and visible light. Green glass offers some protection, but only half as good as amber; dark-amber glass offers almost complete protection. So why is so much wine, particularly many of the ultra-premium wines of the world, packaged in green glass? This is likely for historical reasons when making green-colored glass was easiest and the effect of radiation on wine was unknown.

But glass is only half the story. We must now consider the optical properties of wine to then determine how radiation effects any chemical reaction.

Research has shown that wavelengths in the 375-440 nm range-that is, the high end of the UVA range and the blue (low) end of the visible light range-are most damaging to wine. The amount of radiation absorbed by wine in this range is directly proportional to opacity; therefore, red wine absorbs the most, and is most affected, while white wine absorbs the least-rosé wine is in the middle. As such, for marketing purpose where displaying color is important, white wine can be stored in clear glass, although not for extended periods of time; that’s why premium whites, such as age-worthy Chablis wines come in dead-leaf-colored glass, a golden-yellow color that provides better protection than green.

Opaque, deeply colored, rich reds absorb almost all radiation; however, these have the highest concentration of effect-inhibiting tannins, which provide protection. But if the concentration is low or the extent of exposure is long, unpleasant and off-putting aromas and flavors can develop. Specifically, …

Keys to College (UWF) Success

Keys to College (UWF) Success

Each semester millions of people attend classes at a local or online college. All students know that textbooks, lectures, and projects will become part of their daily lives. Most wonder what they can do to be as successful as possible in their courses and make the road to a degree as easy as possible. The following are a few recommendations to help any student do well:

Know what works for you. Before you enter the classroom know what you are going to have to do to achieve your best in that class. Understand where your strengths are and find help for your weakest areas.

Know how you learn best . Are you a visual learner? Do you have to physically write-down notes or are you okay with typing them or, perhaps, just listening to the lecture?

Know how to study . Use the study methods that are best suited for you. Give yourself adequate time to review material. Do not form a study group with anyone if the time will not be used productively.

Know what your resources are . All campuses have some form of academic help. Utilize tutors, libraries, databases, organizations, and professors' office hours when you need them.

Be prepared. Preparation is an element of success in almost anything. Image is no different. Just showing up to class is not enough.

Keep a calendar of assignment due dates. With everything there is to get done, it can be hard to remember when things are due. Create a calendar to stay on top of due dates and make sure that you are managing your time wisely.

Get started on assignments and projects early. Oftentimes, projects and assignments will require more time than initially expected; Completing the work as soon as possible allows you to dedicate the appropriate time to the task and do a better job.

Become familiar test material ahead of time. Focus foremost on the information you are certain will be on the test (or quiz). From there, concentrate on important topics / main points and items of discussion highlighted in class lectures.

Actually READ the chapters of the textbook. While most of the text is similar to lectures, reading the book ahead of class will allow you to follow the discussion more easily and understand what is going on.

Be willing to put in the extra work. No one ever attended college because they thought it would be easy. You have to study many hours and collaborate on group work to have a successful college career.

Ask questions. If you do not understand something, ask the professor or peers, most are more than willing to help.

Do not skip any assignments. Avoid the temptation to 'just take a zero' for one or two small assignments. You do not want to be kicking yourself at the end of the semester because you are.01 away from a higher letter grade (or even passing the class), which could have …
